About Software Defined Media WG


The target of a professional audio system includes 1) PA/SR systems for Live sound, 2) Production systems for Broadcasting, Music or Cinema or 3) BGM or Paging system. The signals need to be transferred among the above systems in uncompressed data format. For example, it requires 148Mbps for payload bandwidth in the case of transmitting 128 channels with 48kHz and 24bits. In order to fulfill the requirements of precise time synchronization and low latency, analog line has been used for a long time. However recently, IP network is replacing the analog line of the audio systems thanks to the deployment of 1Gbps IP networks.

From the background, the notion of Software Defined Media (SDM) is born. SDM is an architectural approach to audio as a service by virtualization and abstraction of networked audio-visual infrastructure. SDM allows operators to manage audio-visual services through abstraction of lower level functionality. This is done by decoupling the software that makes decisions about how to render the audio-visual service from the underlying infrastructure that inputs and outputs the sound. Thanks to the decoupling, the system can configure flexible and intelligent audio-visual service in order to match a program played on the stage and the direction of the play.
